What is it?

Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition affecting the skin, leading to an accelerated rate of skin cell multiplication, resulting in skin inflammation. The disease is not communicable and cannot be transmitted from one individual to another. Predominantly, psoriasis sufferers have inflamed patches of skin that are red and overlaid with thick, silver-white scales. These patches are usually itchy and can cause a tingling, burning feeling and tenderness. The skin around these patches frequently feels dry and may often crack and bleed. Stiff, swollen joints are also a common symptom.

Symptoms can fluctuate and undergo cycles that can persist for several days or even weeks. Psoriasis is typically a chronic condition. The experienced dermatologists at our medical practice provide treatment for psoriasis across all skin tones in Wooster, Ohio.

How is it treated?

Though there isn't a recognized cure, our board-certified skin specialists can assist with managing your psoriasis using treatments like corticosteroids and oral retinoids to keep symptoms in check. Our medical practice may also suggest remedies like salicylic acid, coal tar, retinoids, and even simpler solutions like aloe vera. In certain instances, our team in Wooster, Ohio, will recommend and apply light/phototherapy to alleviate symptoms. For more acute cases, we can prescribe oral or injectable drugs that help in dampening your immune system.
