What is it?

Eczema, a condition that affects both young and old, is often inherited and linked to allergies. It results in dry, flaky skin, blisters or small lumps, and in harsh instances, eczema can create painful fissures that may bleed. Although many individuals use the term eczema to describe their atopic dermatitis, eczema encompasses a broader spectrum of skin disorders. Atopic dermatitis, the most prevalent type of eczema, can affect nearly every part of the skin.

It is frequently found in infants and toddlers, leading to rashes on their cheeks and chin, but it can also impact people of all ages and any part of the body. Those suffering from eczema undergo flare-ups where the rash becomes inflamed, itchy, uncomfortable and painful, as well as periods of remission that can endure for weeks, months, or even years. Eczema is not infectious, but it's certainly not enjoyable. Our board-certified dermatologists are here to help.

How is it treated?

Although there's no distinct cure for eczema, certain treatments like petroleum jelly and moisturizers can help alleviate the symptoms of this skin condition. It's not uncommon for patients to experience persistent symptoms without additional medical intervention. Our medical team has the expertise to accurately diagnose which of the seven eczema types you might be suffering from and create a tailor-made skin care regimen, such as:

  • Customized skin care routine
  • Wet wrap therapy
  • Trigger control to minimize flare-ups
  • Topical prescription medication
  • Light therapy
  • Systemic (whole-body) medication

Recent advancements in dermatology and science have given rise to new treatments that can significantly reduce, and sometimes even eradicate, symptoms. Patients who haven't found relief from previous treatments might find that these newer medications offer respite. Begin your journey to relief by booking an appointment at our dermatology clinic in Wooster, Ohio.
